Helping Hot Cares donors contribute during a record-breaking fundraising day

Hot Cares, the charitable arm of Johannesburg radio station HOT 102.7 FM, used WhatsApp as a helpful donor channel during its 2025 one-day fundraising event—supported by a fully integrated PayFast payment journey.

The challenge

Make it easy to act during one high-impact day

A one-day fundraising event concentrates public attention and donor intent into a very short window. Hot Cares needed convenient ways to engage potential donors before the event, help supporters contribute while the campaign was live, and communicate effectively afterward.

The donation journey needed to be simple on mobile, capture the donor’s contribution choice, and connect securely to payment—without adding unnecessary friction at the moment someone decided to help. Post-event communication also needed to include important donor documentation such as Section 18A tax certificates.

The WhatsApp donation journey

From supporter interest to secure payment

Step 1

Campaign engagement

Multiple bulk WhatsApp campaigns engaged potential donors before the event and kept supporters informed around the fundraising day.

Step 2

Donor engagement

Supporters could engage with Hot Cares through WhatsApp during the live fundraising campaign.

Step 3

Donation choice

A clear guided journey helped donors choose and submit the contribution they wanted to make.

Step 4

Integrated payment

The donation flow connected to PayFast so supporters could move smoothly from intent to secure payment.

Step 5

Post-event follow-up

After the event, bulk WhatsApp messaging supported donor follow-up and the distribution of Section 18A tax certificates.

Bulk campaigns before and after the event

Hot Cares used multiple bulk WhatsApp messaging campaigns to build awareness, engage potential donors, share timely event communication, and maintain momentum around the fundraising initiative.

Section 18A tax certificate follow-up

After the event, WhatsApp provided a practical channel for donor follow-up, including sending Section 18A tax certificates to qualifying donors as part of the post-campaign experience.

The result

R27,565,000

Hot Cares raised a record R27,565,000 during its 2025 one-day fundraising event. WhatsApp provided a helpful channel through which donors could choose to contribute and continue into the integrated PayFast payment process.
